The alpha and the Omega

In the first of a number of articles in the week leading up to the Royal Rumble, we take a look at Kenny Omega who has been rumoured to be coming to the WWE.

This rumour has been gaining momentum over the last month or so. When he was on the Talk Is Jericho podcast, Jericho concluded by asking whether Omega's future lies in the WWE or not and saying that we would find out soon. This definitiveness to knowing his future suggests to me that it will be a positive outcome for WWE fans.

Other hints have included John Cena posting a picture of Omega on his Instagram (he did a similar thing with AJ Styles last year), Triple H being asked if he was interested in Omega and responding that the fact he is being asked that question means he is interested in him and most recently, the fact that 411Mania reports that both Omega and the Bullet Club will not be working the next New Japan tour.

I had no idea who Omega was as I've not been able to spend much time watching non-WWE content, so I decided to do some research.

Listening to the Jericho podcast made me think that he's a cool guy. Omega used to be in WWE developmental but left as he thought he would be more use to the company if he learnt his trade elsewhere and came back to WWE a star. That made it sound like he clearly wanted to come back to the company but doesn't seem to have an ego about it.

This is a guy that isn't afraid to embarrass himself completely as long as it puts on a good show. He wrestled to a draw with a little girl and put on a great match against Yoshihiko the sex doll.

However, the man can also put on an incredible match when the stakes are more serious. His WrestleKingdom 11 match against Kazuchika Okada was given an unprecedented 6-star rating by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer, and is an early contender for match of 2017. If you have a spare hour and you like wrestling (if you don't, why are you reading this?) you could do a lot worse than checking out the match online.

Omega clearly has the talent, clearly loves entertaining and is always enjoyable to watch. In a way he reminds me of Mark Hoppus of Blink 182, in that his facial expressions alone match watching him worthwhile.

With the look of an 80s rock star, Omega could find his own place on the WWE roster and there are lots of options about what they could do with him. He's got a history with AJ Styles, Finn Balor and The Club that could easily be reprised to allow him to slot into the company easily. He's also got the talent to go straight into a program with anyone in the upper-mid card. I'd love to see an Omega v Dean Ambrose match, for instance.

Whether he turns up at the Royal Rumble remains to be seen, but if all WWE fans could keep their fingers crossed for the next week, I would greatly appreciate it.
